THE HUNGER GAMES

Author Bio

Suzanne Collins

Suzanne Collins began her career by writing for children's television.  She has worked on several Nickelodean shows, including  Clarissa Explains it All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo.  She wrote Little Bear and Oswald.  Additionally, she co-wrote the Rankin/Bass Christmas Special, Santa, Baby! and most recently was the head writer for Clifford's Puppy Days.
While working on Generation O!, she met author James Proimos, who convinced her to try writing children's books.  Thus, she began writing the story of Gregor the Overlander, the first book in her five-part fantasy/war series The Underland Chronicles.
In September 2008, Scholastic Press released the Hunger Games, the first book in a three part series.  The Hunger Games was inspired by the Greek myth of Theseus and Minotaur.  Collins also drew in her experience of having a father in the Air Force, which better allowed her to understand poverty, starvation, and the effects of war.
The triology's second book, Catching Fire was released in September 2009, and Mockingjay, the third installment, was published in August, 2010.
Within 14 months, 1.5 million copies of the first two books were sold in North America.  Hunger Games has been on The New York Times Best Seller list for more than 60 weeks in a row.
Lions Gate Entertainment acquired worldwide distribution rights to a film adaptation of The Hunger Games.  Directed by Gary Ross, the cast includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth.
The Hunger Games has become an international phenomenon.
